Hickok Homes is a design-build studio serving Kansas City, Overland Park, and Scottsdale — founded on the idea that a home should be built by people who are still accountable to it after the final walkthrough.
Our Story
Hickok Homes was founded by James Hickok around a simple frustration with how the home building industry is usually structured: homeowners are often passed between a separate architect, a separate builder, and a separate project manager, with no one person accountable for the whole outcome. We built our company to close that gap — design, budgeting, and construction managed by one team, on every project, regardless of size.
What started as custom home and renovation work in the Kansas City area has grown into a two-market design-build studio, with a second home base in Scottsdale and Carefree, Arizona, serving Paradise Valley, Cave Creek, and the broader Phoenix metro. Building in two very different climates — Midwest seasons and the Sonoran Desert — has sharpened how we think about construction: every building envelope, mechanical system, and material choice has to actually perform in the place it is built, not just look good in a rendering.

Our mission is straightforward: design and build homes our clients are still proud of fifteen years after move-in, not just on closing day. That means we treat structural integrity and craftsmanship as non-negotiable, even in the parts of a project no one will ever see.
We value transparency over sales pitches — clients get honest budget ranges and realistic timelines from the first conversation. We value craftsmanship over speed, choosing trade partners who have proven themselves over many projects rather than the lowest bidder. And we value the communities we build in, supporting local trades and giving back to the neighborhoods where our clients live.

Founder & Owner
James Hickok is the founder and owner of Hickok Homes, leading the company’s custom home building and renovation work across Kansas City, Overland Park, and Scottsdale. James built Hickok Homes around a design-build model that keeps architecture, budgeting, and on-site craftsmanship under one accountable team, and he remains directly involved in every project from initial design through final walkthrough.
