“Spa-like” gets used to describe almost every bathroom remodel, but very few actually deliver the feeling — usually because the ideas that create that effect are structural and layout decisions, not just finish choices added at the end.
A curbless, zero-threshold walk-in shower does more for the feel of a bathroom than almost any other single decision. Removing the visual and physical barrier of a curb opens the whole room up, and paired with a frameless glass enclosure (or no enclosure at all, depending on layout), it reads as dramatically more open and intentional than a standard tub-shower combo.
Freestanding tubs are still a strong choice where the layout supports one, but they work best as a deliberate focal point — positioned to take advantage of natural light or a window view — rather than squeezed into a leftover corner. If your layout cannot comfortably support a freestanding tub without compromising the rest of the room, a well-detailed built-in tub with a wider deck and quality tile surround is usually the better choice.
Lighting is the most underrated lever in a bathroom remodel. Most bathrooms are lit for a single purpose — bright, even light for grooming — with no layering for evening use. A genuinely spa-like bathroom layers dedicated task lighting at the vanity with dimmable ambient lighting elsewhere in the room, so the same space can feel clinical in the morning and calm at night.
Material choices matter, but they matter most when they support the layout and lighting decisions above rather than substituting for them. Full-height tile, natural stone, and warm metal finishes all read as more luxurious in a room that already has the right bones — curbless access, good proportions, and layered light.
