Two features come up in nearly every primary bathroom conversation we have, whether it’s a full custom home or a renovation: curbless walk-in showers and freestanding tubs. Both are about more than aesthetics — they genuinely change how the room functions.
Curbless showers remove the physical and visual barrier of a traditional shower curb, which makes a bathroom both more accessible (a real consideration as homeowners think long-term about aging in place) and more visually open — the eye reads the whole room as one continuous space rather than a shower boxed off in the corner.
Freestanding tubs have shifted from a purely decorative feature to one homeowners actually expect to use regularly, which changes how we design around them — proximity to a window or natural light, a wide enough deck for actual use, and proper drainage and support, since freestanding tubs full of water are genuinely heavy.
Where both features are present, layout sequencing matters: positioning the tub as a visual anchor while keeping the curbless shower easily accessible without crossing wet zones unnecessarily is a real design exercise, not just a furniture placement decision.
Both features also tend to increase resale appeal in the luxury segment of both the Kansas City and Scottsdale markets — they read as a meaningful upgrade rather than a cosmetic one, which is part of why we see them requested so consistently.
