Hiring a general contractor is a high-stakes decision that often gets made on gut feeling and a portfolio review. A few direct questions reveal far more about how a project will actually go.
Ask how they handle subcontractor relationships — are these trades they’ve worked with consistently for years, or sourced project to project? Long-standing trade relationships are a strong signal of consistent quality and accountability across your project.
Ask specifically how unexpected issues get communicated and priced once a wall is opened. Every renovation of an existing home carries some risk of surprises; what matters is whether the contractor has a clear, fair process for handling them, or whether that process is vague until it happens to you.
Ask about their current project load and who, specifically, will be your point of contact day to day. A contractor juggling too many simultaneous projects, or one who can’t name your actual day-to-day contact, is a real warning sign for the level of attention your project will get.
Finally, ask for references from a project similar in scope to yours — a contractor who does excellent kitchen remodels isn’t automatically the right choice for a whole-home renovation or a complex addition, and scope-matched references are far more useful than general ones.
